Viewer's Choice: Visualization Universe

2018-04-18

I chose to present Visualization Universe, a website that has all sorts of data on different visualizations, which I thought was fitting given the class's subject matter. Below is a screenshot of the front page, which has some info about the project as well as links to the various data visualizations.

Front page

This is the first page, which shows the relative popularity of different charts. These can be sorted alphabetically, by popularity, and by how stable their popluarity is.

Graphs data

Clicking on a graph type brings up an advanced view that shows info about that chart and it's popularity.

Detailed graph data

This is the second page, which again shows the relative popularity, but of different books on visualizations. Again, these can be sorted alphabetically, by popularity, and by how stable their popluarity is.

Books data

And again, clicking on a book type brings up an advanced view that shows info about that book and it's popularity.

Detailed books data

This is the third and final page, which again shows the relative popularity, but of different tools for visualizations. This time, they're seperated into specialized visualization tools and general purpose tools. Again, these can be sorted alphabetically, by popularity, and by how stable their popluarity is.

Tools data

And yet again, clicking on a tool brings up an advanced view that shows info about that tool and it's popularity.

Detailed tools data

Pros

All colors are colorblind safe, icons are fairly intuitive, and space is generally used well.

Cons

There doesn't seem to be a way to select 2 or more options for direct comparison. Addtionally, the seperation between specialized and general tools should be optional, to make comparisons eaiser.
